SpellStorm 2012 - Gaming Convention Feb 24-26

Hi gamers!

Mark your calendars for the weekend of February 24-26. We have the same venue booked as last year (Long Branch Royal Legion, at Long Branch & Lakeshore in Etobicoke).

As many of you know Dominic & I suffered a personal tragedy in October of this year, around the time we would have liked to have started planning. This has caused some setbacks in terms of timing and getting the word out. We are requesting that as many people as possible give us a hand to get Spellstorm up and running so that we can continue to support the only exclusive tabletop gaming convention in Toronto.

We are going to host a open meeting on Jan 7 at our house to discuss how we can get Spellstorm off the ground and make it bigger and better than last year. We would love it if you could come - please RSVP by emailing either myself or Dominic at [masked]. We live in Mississauga, and we'll pass on address and directions once you can confirm you'll be coming.

if you know of anyone who would be interested in helping plan or participating in Spellstorm, please pass on this email.

If you can't make it to our house on January 7th, but still want to help out, please feel free to email me at any time and let me know what you'd like to do.

Some of the areas up for discussion and needing volunteers:

Door / tickets
Setup, Tear down
Volunteer coordinator
mustering game masters and players
Leads for organized play
Recycle games table
Board games library supervisor
Warhorn booking engine supervisor
Getting the word out
Some other ideas we have come up with to boost our bottom line:

50 / 50 draw
silent auction
raffle with donated prizes
vendor tables
Looking forward to hearing from all of you.

thanks!
Stephanie Amann

P.S. even if you have a question or suggestion please feel free to drop me a line. I don't have current or extensive email address list of people who might be interested, so please get the word out there.

Please note: This is not a TAG event, though if you do plan on attending, please RSVP as other community members may want to connect with you.

Is this a board game venue, or primarily D&D?

    Hi Gerry,

I do see mention of Boardgames in their description and have attended other Warhorn events where boardgames, CCG, and other games were played. Best to check with Stephanie Amann of SpellStorm 2012.

Could someone please change the Address? It is incorrect. It should be 3850 Lakeshore Blvd. West.

I had a lot of fun playing with the Pathfinder Organized Play folks, as well as the Steve Jackson rep, but overall the convention was a little smaller than expected. I really feel that it wasn't advertised well enough to attract players; most of those who showed up were affiliated with other groups who had advertised the convention internally. Perhaps as a result of the low attendance, the admission fees were rather high as well. I had to pay $20 to gain admission and play two slots - a bit steeper than I would have liked. That being said, Spellstorm was still a lot of fun! It’s notoriously hard to get Toronto players out of their home games and into public engagements, so even a smaller convention is a notable accomplishment. I do see a lot of potential for this convention to grow (heck, it’s really the only dedicated game convention in Toronto), but it really depends on how much effort is put into promoting it. I hope to see things kicked up a notch for next year’s con!

Spellstorm is a great place to meet fellow gamers in the GTA and I'm glad I went.

It was a very cozy little con, four tables were generally reserved for gaming when I was there. There was also my free demos of Steve Jackson games available as well. Good fun for all.
